About Us

So Cal Chiweenie Rescue was created in order to promote the Chiweenie breed, teach people about them as they are a a breed and not just a mutt as well as rescue deathrow Chiweenies from local high kill shelters and find them forever loving homes.

Here is the rescue's story:

So Cal Chiweenie Rescue was founded in Oceanside, Ca all because of a little long haired Chiweenie named Kaci. Kaci's owner Jadie Betancourt, the founder and president of the rescue had no idea what a Chiweenie was when she first got Kaci. She had never owned a Chihauhua or a Dachshund, let alone a Chiweenie, before and her husband had never even seen a Dachshund in real life, only on TV and in pictures. Kaci was adopted from the local animal shelter, after being dumped in the middle of the night there with a note from her owner stating that they could no longer keep her due to moving. Jadie planned on getting a Rat Terrier that she had learned about on Petfinder.com and that is how her and Kaci's worlds inertwined. When Jadie went to look at the Terrier she soon found out that it was not going to work. So she thought she might as well get Kaci out and play with her, not intending on adopting her at all. Jadie sat in the room and waited for them to bring Kaci in, when they did she ran and jumped up on Jadie's lap without even looking around. So of corse Jadie adopted her and brought her home to her guinea pig, fish and cat.

After having Kaci for about three months Jadie heard about another dog in need, Tyler. Tyler was about two hours away in an extermly high kill shelter which was planning on killing him at only seven months old. Jadie had one day to act before he was put down. Her and her husband packed up their stuff and headed North first thing the next morning in order to save the little guy, not really knowing what they were getting theirselves into. Jadie had heard horror storys about the Devore Animal Shelter but nothing like she experienced. The "shelter" had almost an errie feeling to it, it could be explained best as a  concentration camp for dogs. The dogs were sitting in thier wire, concret cages outside surrounded by snow-capped mountians freezing to death without even a warm blanket to sleep on. None of the dogs even seemed to have the will to live, they knew exectly what was going to happen to them. As Jadie and her husband pulled down the long driveway after adopting Tyler Jadie decided that she will do what ever it takes to help the little ones at that hell hole for dogs.

Jadie knew that she wanted to save Chiweenies so she went home and did some research and found out that there was not one Chiweenie rescue in the United States. These poor dogs were falling through the cracks with other rescues and being put down because of the overwelming number of them and the fact that they were miss marked on their ID cards as Chihuaha mixes or Dachshund mixes.

And the rest is history, after doing some more research and getting alot of help from other rescues Jadie created So Cal Chiweenie Rescue. On her first trip to Devore Animal Shelter as the rescue she was able to save six dogs from death.

So Cal Chiweenie Rescue puts all of their animals in foster homes, not just another cage. They are put into homes with families that love and care for them until they are able to find their forever home. None of our dogs are ever put down due to overcrowding or behavior reasons, this is worked through and they are kept as long as it takes to find them a forever home.

All of our dogs are deathrow dogs. We never pull a dog from the shelter until it is on its very last day that way they have a chance to be adopted by a loveing home first. Sadly, at this time we are only taking Chiweenies from the Devore Animal Shelter in San Bernardino County due to the overwelming amount of dogs there. We hope to expend to all over California,  the United States and one day have to start taking in another breeds of dog due to the fact that there are no longer any Chiweenies in need.
